In India , more than a million people get bitten by snakes each year and fifty thousand people die of snakebite. But not all of the 350 odd snakes of India are dangerous. 4 species contribute to 90 per cent of the snakebite deaths in the country.
Why so? Because they are extremely common, live amongst people and have a lethal bite. Can these astronomical death figures be reduced? Can the bad reputation these snakes have be changed?
Herpetologist Rom Whitaker , an expatriate American, who has spent the past 50 years studying snakes in India, feels there is a way out.
